Good Vibes! Windrush Day 2019

About

In early 2019, SoCo Music Project and Black Heritage were successful in receiving funding from the government’s Windrush Day Grant Scheme to celebrate and commemorate the incredible impact of the Windrush generation on Southampton’s culture. The project, delivered in partnership with Unity 101 and local creative organisations City Eye and ArtfulScribe, will capture and reflect on the extraordinary stories and memories from everyday lives that have shaped Southampton’s culture.

A series of exciting interactive workshops, taking place at the heart of the community, will explore and celebrate the culture, lives, challenges, journeys and personal experiences of the Windrush generation and their descendants in Southampton. These will be shared with the next generation and the wider community through inspirational celebratory events and educational workshops.

“This is good news and will really help to raise the profile of West Indian culture in Southampton. We’re looking forward to working with SoCo, learning from each other to capture, celebrate and share our rich heritage.”

About The Windrush Generation

Windrush Day, 22 June, marks the anniversary of the docking of MV Empire Windrush at the Port of Tilbury, near London, on 22 June 1948. The arrival of the Empire Windrush over 70 years ago marked a seminal moment in Britain’s history and has come to represent the rich diversity of this nation.

The people who arrived on the Empire Windrush, their descendants and those who followed them have made and continue to make an enormous contribution to Britain, not just in the vital work of rebuilding the country and public services following WWII but in enriching our shared social, economic, cultural and religious life.

Windrush Day Workshops

As a legacy to the Good Vibes! Windrush Day event, Black Heritage, Artful Scribe and SoCo Music Project delivered a series of creative workshops in schools to explore a variety of themes, such as the diversity of Southampton’s community, the meaning of ‘home’ and personal journeys.
